Native Foods' Açaí comes directly from the Amazon rain forest, from sustainable harvests that boost the local economy. With the increasing value of this fruit, the Amazonian population has created a sustainable source of income and avoided the felling of the açaí palm.
Besides using the fruit pulp, as we do at Native Foods, local communities use the seeds to make handicrafts and the leaves to produce hammocks, hats and even roofs for houses.
At Native, we care about choosing fruit from sustainable crops that support local communities.

What is açaí?
Açaí is a small palm berry, purple or black in colour, about 1cm long. The açaí palm can be up to 30 meters tall and has several trunks, each bearing up to 900 fruits. It is a very small fruit and its seed accounts for about 85% of its size, which means that only 5% of the fruit is edible.
Where does Açaí come from?
The palm from which the açaí comes from is very common in lowland and flood areas in the Amazon region, in the states of Pará, Maranhão, Amazonas, Amapá, Rondônia and Acre. It has always been consumed by the native Amazonian populations, who inherited the custom from the indigenous Amazonians. Nowadays, it is one of the most consumed Brazilian fruits worldwide.
Why is açaí a sustainable product?
The entire area around the Amazon River has suffered from deforestation and the indiscriminate use of its natural resources, for timber, plantations, and heart-of-palm exploitation. By adding value to the açaí, not only was a source of income for the population created, but also the felling of palm trees for heart-of-palm was avoided.
By consuming Açaí, are we deforesting the Amazon?
On the contrary! By consuming açaí we are valuing the Amazon forest, fighting against its deforestation. Thanks to the increasing value of the fruit, the Amazon inhabitants are more dedicated to harvesting the fruit than to cutting down the palm trees, as was previously the case.
